So far I love this shoe, very supportive and good arch. I had to order a half size smaller. Like the extra cover on the toe.

I have run consistently in Salomon XA Pro's since their introduction a decade or so ago. I normally run trails and recently decided that I should probably look for more appropriate footwear, as I tend to run more strenuous, treacherous trails than the XA s are really meant for: I wanted the added stability and confidence in step! I tried out both the Speedcross 3 and also the new Fellraisers. After playing with them both, I have decided on the Speedcross 3 over the Fellraisers. Here's my take and experience with them. I have what would be termed a Low-Volume foot I guess? Normal length, a bit narrow and just not that bulky. I have loved the XA Pros since I put them on, they were the best-fitting shoe I had ever worn bar-none. When I began trail running it was the occasional jaunt up some random hills, and the XA's were more up to the task than any other shoe I'd worn before! However, recently I have begun running more, and the old guys were showing their shortcomings as I have hit more technical trails. Also, as I got more technical, I had to start cinching them down more and more. I also went down a half-size to stop my foot from sliding forward on steep declines. I also started doubling up on socks! I bought and tried both the Fellraisers and Speedcross side-by-side. For my style of foot, the Speedcross reigns supreme for fitment. At a 10.5, I have more room to cinch down than the 10.5 XA Pros, and that's wearing my skinny socks compared to my thick running socks on the XAs! Comparatively, the Fellraisers needed an extra half-size to accommodate length; I was wearing a size 11 to avoid bashing my toes. However, they were not as snug everywhere else as the Speedcross 3: too much wiggle room at my heel and my toes. So if you have a narrow foot, Speedcross. If you have a wider foot, fellraisers may feel better (and add a half-size). The Fellraisers were not as strong in the lateral stability department either. They tended to want to roll my ankle pretty bad compared to the Speedcross. The Speedcross felt very stable, even considering they have a higher heel/toe ratio than the Fells and very similar tread design. While I liked the tread pattern a little more as well as the harder compound, the lack of fit made it that these would not work well for my feet on the trails. Shame, I had such high hopes!

They tended to want to roll my ankle pretty bad compared to the Speedcross. The Speedcross felt very stable, even considering they have a higher heel/toe ratio than the Fells and very similar tread design. After deciding on which was going to get the nod for trail duty, I set out to put the Speedcross through the paces! As I type this I have put down over 30 miles in them: a warmup 3 miler, a couple 5 s, and most recently a 20-mile run/hike. Grip-wise these things cannot be beat. They outclass my XAs so bad it s not funny. Places before I would have been slipping and sliding these things don't budge. And it's not that they feel drastically different or like they're going to break your ankles with grip, it's simply that they dig in and give you confidence in mucky terrain without much fanfare or thought. I had one small hotspot/blister on my left heel after my 20-mile trip which shouldn't be an issue more than once in my experience. other than that, these things are like wearing your feet, they are just so comfortable on the trails it's not funny. The tread is very grippy, the rubber itself is very soft. These are at home and definitely made for the trails, not the pavement. They feel very awkward on hard terrain like that, and I imagine the soft rubber will wear down quickly. While the fellraisers and speedcross have very similar tread patterns, I gotta give the nod to the fells. The rubber is a bit stiffer so it s less likely to tear and wear off, and the chevrons themselves seem a bit more aggressive than the Speeds sort of the evolution of the pattern! The toe on the Speedcross is a bit narrow but I did not find that I felt crowded at all. They look from the top down that they'd be a little laterally unstable compared to the XAs or Fells but that was not my experience. While I'd love to see the chevron pattern updated on the Speeds to match the new Fellraisers, overall I must say these are the my new favorite shoes. Period.

I love the look and style of the boot. The fit is true to size, width is wider than expected. I can use my orthotics inserts. So I am a happy camper and ready to play in the snow.

Found these shoes to lack foot cushion for a trail shoe - these also were a bit narrow for a Med. The arch placement was a bit off as well. Wanted to try something different but will go back to Merrell because they fit my high instep 13 monster foot better...a true fit unlike these Salomons - I did really like the style though. They looked sharp - sad they didn't feel right.

I love the look of these shoes and get a lot of compliments; however, I would not purchase again. I use them for very light running couch to 5K kind of thing and a lot of walking. I do not care for the lacing system at all and the shoe runs large in length and width. They are lightweight and in my opinion not a good walking shoe.

Very happy with these hiking shoes. I have problem sore feet and I'm now able to get out and be comfortable, making my hikes much more enjoyable. I'm also getting a lot of compliments on their look from fellow hikers! I appreciated the comments about sizing, and ordered a half size smaller than normal, and that worked well for me, and I also recommend that others do this.

Non-vibram sole is weak, non-durable and thin at the heel. When wet, the nubuck stretches and the boot leaks like a sieve in moderate rain. When you dry the shoe using heat or just let it dry without heat, it shrinks and is no longer comfortable.

Fantastic shoes! Ready to run right out of the box, comfy, grippy as hell, hi-tech laces work great, and they look good too.

I got these boots for Christmas and ended up returning them for a 1/2 size larger. Because the toe box and sides are molded rubber there is no stretch and I like cold weather boots to fit slightly loose. These are excellent boots! Very comfortable, incredibly light weight, and warm. I get a little heel lift which is tolerable but takes a little getting used to- that would be my only complaint but they may fit others without issue. If you want a warm pair of boots that look good enough to wear around town and won't weigh you down, these would be a good choice. As always shipping and returns with Zappos went smoothly and fast!

Great shoe but I wish they would stop soliciting for more business every time I'm on the Internet I see pop ups telling me how much they miss me. Love the shoes but Gerrard.

Great color! Not the most comfortable shoe I own. These are my "show" shoes... I wear them on weekends and to my son's baseball games, but prefer running and working out in a more cushioned pair of shoes.

These are great boots. Very comfortable from the very first wearing. Warm without being too warm. I wore these in 40 weather working inside and outside throughout the day, they transitioned nicely. Attractive and durable, I think these boots will continue to look better with age and wear.

I'm glad I read the other reviews before purchasing these shoes. I ordered a half size smaller than my true size. I love the colors and the fact I don't have to deal with laces. Fun color options!

Beware of the Quicklace system on the Salomon X Ultra 2, because it can injure your foot. Salomons usually fit my feet better than any other brand, and I have enjoyed the convenience of the Quicklaces in the past, but the Quicklaces on the X Ultra 2s pass thru their metal eyelets with almost no friction. That means that as you step the Quicklaces move around like a pulley system to equalize the tension. If you stretch out the laces above the foot while lifting your heel, then the laces near the toes immediately contract in reaction. If you are going up an extremely steep hill then your heel will lift out of the shoe at the same time as the front of your foot is being crushed under your own strength with the power of a tourniquet. On my first hike in these it felt like my metatarsals, which should lay side-by-side, were being bunched together like pencils in a rubber band. Deforming the bone structure of the foot, while causing excruciating pain and a dangerous loss of stability, is a big negative for me. I had to cut the laces (vs walk home in my socks) and re-lace them, passing twice thru each eyelet to hold them firm and stop the pulley effect. Surprisingly, this worked great and I actually love these shoes now. However, do not buy the X Ultra 2s unless you are willing to tinker with the Quicklaces (traditional laces will not fit thru the eyelets), or risk a debilitating foot injury from a sloppy-fitting shoe. Salomon's Quicklaces need to slow down.

This is my second pair of Salomon XA Pro 3D. I originally bought this pair for trail running but I found them to be perfect for my job, which requires me to be on my feet and moving for 12 hours at a time. Very comfortable, with room in the toe box that doesn't feel sloppy. Ironically, for my job I had been buying running shoes with lots of cushioning, thinking they would be better on my knees. These, I feel, are more lightly cushioned (but not so much that they feel like the barefoot type shoes)and have been so much better for my knees and back. Of course, they are fabulous running shoes as well.

I bought these shoes prior to going on vacation with my wife (who loves to walk) and the first trip was to Boston, which is a walking city if ever I saw one. We stayed 2 blocks from Fenway and walked to the Common and the waterfront every day as well as all over Cambridge and the shoes were both cool and comfortable throughout. I never had sore feet and although I rated the arch support as moderate, I only did so as it was less that the duty boots I wear 5 days a week in my job as a Paramedic. I've worn them since (July '14 to Feb '15) and found them durable and they show little wear, unusual as I'm hard on footwear (6'3" and 250#). I'm going to buy at least 2 more pair as I'd hate to see something like this disappear and not have a back-up.
