Ruff Wear. In the summer of 1992, while mountain biking in the Los Padres National Forest with friends and their dog, Ruff Wear founder and president Patrick Kruse met with a challenge that sparked a series of innovations in gear for dogs on the go.

While trying to give her dog Moqui a drink, Liz emptied half of her water bottle into a plastic bag and held it while the Rhodesian Ridgeback took a few slurps. Moqui then walked away panting, and Liz was left holding the bag—she couldn't set it down without losing the water and she didn't want to dump what was left back into her water bottle. "You need to do something about this," Liz said, challenging Patrick to develop a solution.

Patrick Kruse was the right person to ask. As a kid he constructed packs for his dog out of army surplus gas mask bags, using them on backpack trips in Northern California's Trinity Alps. As a young adult, he sailed for several years as crew on charter boats in the Caribbean and Central America where being resourceful was a necessity. Patrick's interest in kayaking lead him to start Salamander Paddle Gear acquainting him with numerous technical fabrics. With this unique mix of knowledge and experience Patrick developed The Quencher™, the original collapsible food and water bowl for dogs—and the solution to Liz and Moqui's drinking problem.

In 1994, after 16 months of research and development and product testing, Ruff Wear made its enthusiastically welcomed debut at an Outdoor Retailer trade show with The Quencher™. Since, it has won praise from thirsty dogs and been in a range of publications. "They were impressed with the simplicity, quality and function of The Quencher™ and wanted to see what other solutions we could come up with," Patrick says.

Ruff Wear now offers a full line of innovative performance dog gear. In addition to collapsible bowls, the company produces a full line of dog-related equipment designed to enhance the interaction between humans and dogs. A brief listing of gear includes dog packs, dog boots, dog harnesses, dog coats, and dog life jackets.

"We want to enhance the experience of all dogs and their two legged companions," Patrick says. Besides those who are active with their pets, trainers, working dogs, Search and Rescue teams, Canine Companions and Guide Dog Users all have become Ruff Wear supporters and each present specific challenges in product development. "My needs pale in comparison to those who depend on their dogs for assistance," he says. "The specific tasks and companionship dogs provide is really incredible. It puts a smile on my face when people appreciate the simple design approach that we build into our gear to address complex tasks."

"We’ve always been oriented toward products that will enhance and assist the interaction between dogs and humans. And that has always been and will continue to be our motivation."

I bought this for my year old black Lab mix. She weighs about 60 pounds, and her neck measures 20". So, I opted for the 20"-26" (LG) model. The Ruff Wear website has instructions on how to size properly. The collar itself is fantastic. I love it. It looks good, seems very comfortable, and very sturdy. I read some reviews where people have complained that the collar increases in size over time. This has not been the case for me. Others complained that their dog managed to wiggle out of the collar if the dog pulls back. I've tested this out with several collars and this is true for all of them (other than a full harness). I think that a dog can wiggle out of any collar, that is sized so it does not choke your dog (with 2 fingers of space). My favorite feature is the rubber tag holder and rubber tag silencer. The tag ring comes out of a rubber holder that has the Ruff Wear logo on it. You also get a round rubber disk that you put between your tags (in my case, our dog has a name tag and rabies shot tag). This complete silences that jiggle the tags make as the dog is running around. I also love the fact the the leash buckle is separate from the tag ring. This is a much better solution is it makes it possible to position the leash buckle in the back of your dog's neck for easy access. My only complaint is that there is no overlap between the different collar sizes. These are 11"-14"(SM), 14"-20" (MD), and 20"-26"(LG). My dog's neck is 20" which puts it right in between MD and LG. I opted for LG assuming that her neck is going to grow an inch or two more. However, right now the sizing buckle prevents the leash buckle from moving. So, I cannot place it exactly where I want it to be. Over time, when her neck grows, I can make the collar bigger and move the leash buckle around. I would've preferred to get an 18"-24" collar, which would've been just right.

Bought this for our 3 year old pit bull...she has broken every collar we have bought for her. She pulls very hard on her tie-out and wears the buckle down so she can get out. I thought at first it was a high price to pay for a dog collar but the construction of this is perfect she can't wear the buckle down. It's very cute color too like a wine/purple/mauve. I got the medium she is about 45-50lbs. Very sturdy collar. Going to buy another one for our male pit too.

Love this collar! The leash hook is always at the back of my dog's neck and ready to go! I thought the buckle might be heavy/bulky, but it's not at all. Wonderful collar.

I LOVE this collar! It's so nice to always have the leash hook on the back of her neck, ready to go! The separate hook for the tags is nice, so the leash clip never gets tangled in the tags, making hooking and unhooking the leash that much quicker and hassle free each time. Clip and unclip with just the one hand! For someone that must leash their dogs several times each day this collar is so convenient. I was kind of the worried the buckle might be a little bulky and uncomfortable for my dog, but it's very thin and she hasn't seemed to notice it.
