Since the days of selling arch supports to police officers and waiters, New Balance has been a brand concerned with meeting the needs of the everyday athlete. In pursuing this goal, they developed an "Endorsed By No One" philosophy, which holds that a superior product will sell itself better than any superstar athlete ever could. Really nice, relaxed fit shoes. A little more roomy than most shoes I've tried on in this size, in a good way for my feet. Very comfortable. I have a wide toe box, my toes are all basically the same length, and my ankle/heel is relatively small. These fit great!

This is the first review I have ever written on Zappos and I have bought a lot of shoes from here. But I just had to make a statement about these horrible New Balance shoes! I thought New Balance might have gotten smart and gone back to making shoes like the 991 from many years ago but instead they came out with this crap. The toe box is ridiculously narrow. A wide toe box used to be what New Balance was known for. Way more narrow than my Asics and not as comfortable. I do not have wide feet but when it is hot outside and I am working out my feet tend to swell a little bit. It used to be that New Balance was the best to compensate for that, but not any more. Their quality is now very poor and I have heard from many running stores that they will not even carry them anymore due to the poor quality. I would have to say that Asics has taken over as the best running shoes out there, especially if you wear orthotics. Stay away from these shoes. If you do not like the 993 you will certainly not like this these. They are worse.

I, too, just had to make a statement about these horrible New Balance shoes! I have been a very happy New Balance customer for many years, and was taken in by the company's big ads. Brand new, these shoes feel like they are ready for replacement. There is no foot cushioning at all, and little or no arch support. I am very disappointed. Do not be fooled by the hype.
I'd also recommend: NB 1540 or NB 993

These shoes fit me well. I wore my old 992s long past their useful life because the 993 did not fit me at all. They were too narrow in the toe no matter what combination of sizes I tried. These 990s fit well; unlike the first reviewer, I find the toe box perfect. I have a foot with wide toes (my little toe is right up near the others), but a narrow midfoot and narrow heel. I did have to go up to a half size longer than my 992s, but I do not know if that is New Balance sizing or my feet growing. My one complaint about the shoes is that the red color on the "New Balance" name on the end of the tongue rubs off on the laces. I was tempted to give them four stars for style because of that feature, but I do like the style otherwise. Just lose the unnecessary red dye. And thanks, New Balance, for bringing back a slightly wider pair of shoes, which I can wear!

These are the first shoes I have put on in months that fit correctly with my orthodics and don't hurt my feet.
