The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

Love these boots! I have wanted a pair of Fryes for quite some time and am glad I took the plunge. I am a 7.5-8 with wide feet and I went with the 7.5. When I say I have wide feet I mean that it's generally hard for me to find 'cute' flats/sandals/heels that don't look gross with my wide feet. That being said - I have never purchased a pair of 'wide' shoes; so use your judgment when considering how wide your feet may be in comparison to mine and thinking about these boots. I think I maybe could've gone with the 8, there may have been a bit more wiggle room for my 'wide' feet, but the 7.5 is by no means too small. I wear these all the time since I got them, with skirts, with skinny jeans, to work, on weekends - love them! I'm sure they will last me for years to come. These boots are no joke, you can kick some serious butt in these and look good while doing it!

Really wanted to like this boot, but just did not. Shaft on one seemed set badly--jammed into the front of my shin. Leather not as pretty as I had hoped--looked cheap. And weirdly both too small and too large. Going back!

I've been wearing Frye Boots for 40 years! I'm an engineer, so naturally I had to get the Frye Engineer! And sadly, they are a bit of a let down. I got these boots for work boots and I really work in them. They are cute and they are comfortable. But the leather is not as good a quality as what I'm used to with Frye's. That was a pretty big disappointment. The leather straps just seem like a cheaper grade leather. I've had to oil these boots (used Frye conditioning product) several times. I like the boots, but I don't like the straps. The top buckle sticks out, so if you happen to be wearing girly clothes, you just might get some serious snagging going on there. I wear them with jeans and fold my socks over the top...which reminds me...the top is not very soft and they will rub the ever living stew out of your lower calf! Zappos was the best! They are my new bffs!

I'd also recommend: Ariat, Justins

Awesome boots. Great style and works on many styles of outfits. Comfortable once broken in. I ordered 1/2 size bigger so that I can wear thick socks and it is perfect. If I wear regular socks, my normal size should fit fine.

Thank You Frye and Zappos! I am a hard to fit 8.5 (My foot is a hair on the wide side with a high bone on the top on my foot, whatever that bone is called, and short toes). These boots not only looked exactly as pictured but the 8.5 fit right out of the box. A tip for breaking-in boots which made these slipper like for me... Put a hair dryer in them on a cool/warm setting and let it run for a few minutes, then wear these with a camping sock and buckles on loosest holes. The best boot purchase I've made in years!

My inner chick craved a rugged, low heeled casual boot for tromping through woods and around town. I ordered both this boot and Veronica shortie, to see which boot best suited my 5'2" frame. The shaft on this boot tilts slightly forward and the heel is higher, so I kept it. Once my feet found the footbed, things were fine. But the struggle to get the feet in required patience. Use a plastic bag, take a deep breath, and you'll make it. It gets easier every time. Love this boot. Thank you, Zappos, for impeccable service.
